Our story

What Was the Culture Change Strategy Group?

The Culture Change Strategy Group ran from August 2016 to February 2017, and was a group of 28 creative leaders committed to creating culture change around abortion. The CCSG brought together advocates, researchers, media makers, artists, health professionals, pastors, communicators, policy experts, activists, and more. Working together, the CCSG created an aligned vision, values, and strategies to shift culture around abortion. Now, more than 160 organizations have signed on to that vision--and you can too!

The CCSG was designed and facilitated by a Process Design Team made up of leaders from across our movement:
-Monica Raye Simpson, SisterSong
-Julia Reticker-Flynn, Advocates for Youth
-Poonam Dreyfus-Pai, CoreAlign
-Kate Cockrill, Sea Change
-Madeline Blodgett, Sea Change

What is Culture Change?

Culture is defined as:

  1. The beliefs, values, and customs that a group shares.
  2. A group of people that has shared beliefs, values, and customs.
  3. The creative activities (like art, community-building, or literature) that members of a cultural group produce.

In culture change work we leverage culture (3) to shift culture (1) within a culture (2).

Or in other words: In culture change work we leverage creative activities to shift the beliefs, values, and customs that a group shares.

Why culture change?

Abortion isn’t just a medical or political issue--it’s a social and emotional experience embedded in a cultural context. If we address solely the medical or political aspects of abortion, we miss a great need and opportunity to change the culture around abortion. Without addressing culture, we will never secure reproductive justice and abortion access for all.

our Group

Members of the Culture Change Strategy Group recognize a need to collaborate, but also recognize there are barriers to collaboration, including:

  • Scarcity of funding for culture change work.
  • An unequal distribution of power, privilege, and resources within our movement.
  • A lack of understanding and alignment across various approaches to culture change.
  • Reproductive health, rights, and justice advocates are losing cultural ground and feeling burnt out.

Yet culture change is more critical than ever. We know we have the power and opportunity to unite and shape what our culture will look like 10, 20, 30 years from now – but only if we think and strategize together.

This is why the CCSG created the vision, values, and strategies you'll find on this site.

Together, we created a shared definition of and vision for culture change, a meaningful collaboration between diverse stakeholders on culture change around abortion, and a set of actionable strategies that will shift culture around abortion.
