Take Action

#blackabortionsmatter

#black abortions matter

introduction

The United States has a long history of controlling the bodies, reproduction, and families of Black Americans. We believe progress toward racial justice and Black liberation must include reproductive justice -- and true reproductive justice must include abortion.

Yet, the Black liberation and Black Lives Matter movements have not included reproductive rights in their platforms. Moreover, Black anti-abortion activists are co-opting language from the Black liberation and Black Lives Matter movements, causing division, shame, trauma, misinformation, psychological manipulation, and continued oppression. This thwarts our shared goal of racial justice. It also creates confusion among many in the Black community about the connection between abortion access and Black liberation.

our strategies

  1. 1. Engage and mobilize Black Twitter.
  2. 2.Educate Black congregants.
  3. 3.Train Black faith leaders to be reproductive justice advocates and to provide non-judgmental ministry of presence to those accessing abortion services.
  4. 4. Connect with and influence popular culture influencers, with a focus on reality TV.
  5. 5.Approach the founders of Black Lives Matter and discuss the potential inclusion of reproductive justice concerns in their platform.

Each strategy attempts to elevate reproductive rights and abortion access in the Black liberation movement, thus helping to regain some ground in the culture war against abortion and to dismantle abortion stigma.
